Reading

Reading in middle school can be both exciting AND frustrating.

Sometimes we need to read texts that do not excite us.

Other times we are lucky to be asked to read texts that we find interesting or even exciting.

And other times, (my favorite) we get to read something just because we want to!!!   That's what I've been able to do this past week.  I went to the library and picked three books just because their cover art and summaries caught my attention.  I just finished reading The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd (author of The Secret Life of Bees) and Lisey's Story by Stephen King.  Now I'm trying to decide if I will read the 3rd novel.  It's called Mr. Potter and it was written by Jamaica Kincaid.  I want to read it, but the first 10 pages have had sections written in dialect and accent.  I have often struggled with these types of texts.

****Wondering what my students think I should decide.  Should I forge ahead and read this short novel?   Should I give up and return it to the library unread???*****

But Enough About Me!!!
What have you been up to??  Hopefully some fun stuff.  AND some relaxing.  Everyone needs to relax once in awhile.

But it is also important that we keep using our minds.  Our brains are like our muscles.  If we want them to remain strong, then we need to use them regularly.

Reading is one activity that helps keep you brain active and ready to learn all kinds of things (not just school stuff!).  Have you checked out your libraries lately?  If not, here area few links.

The Providence Community Library system-there is sure to be one not far from where you live.  Here is a link to their information for getting a library card.  If you are 14 or older, you can register for a card by yourself.  If you are not 14 yet, be sure to bring a parent.

The Providence Public Library on Empire Street and their page for getting a library card.

Can't get to a library?  Check out one of these sites then.

Children's Storybook's Online  I haven't used this one very much yet.  It has a place to choose stories for young children, older children, and young adults.  Please let me know what you think of these stories!

Storyline Online  On this site, celebrities/famous people read books aloud in streaming videos.  Many of these books may be thought of as being for "younger readers," but there are quite a variety to choose from.  Maybe you would like to hear a few.  MAYBE you would like to share some with a younger sibling or cousin or ???

My Online Reading This site has a variety of very short and easy to read texts.  Also good for sharing with a brother, sister, or cousin.

We Give Books  I have not fully explored this site. There seems to be a variety of fiction and nonfiction books for early to early independent readers.  You do need to create a free membership to use this site.  If you are younger than 13, you are supposed to get an adult to create the membership.

Hoping you find a good book to read today!!
